Born in Maracaibo, Venezuela and based in New York, Luis Urribari grounds his practice in the imaginary. Employing a clear architectural sensibility through his paintings and sculpture, he explores tensions and harmonies in time, nature, and space.
Urribarri is deeply curious about the psychological influence of architecture and its power to generate a personal awareness of scale and presence. In his work, the viewer’s interpretation is as much a material as plaster, marble, canvas, or steel. He uses these physical materials to manipulate light and perspective, ultimately creating portals to daydreamed environments. Where architecture is explicit, Urribarri’s painting and sculptures are expressive and unprescribed. While, for him, the pleasure exists in the process, the work is ultimately presented as an invitation for conversation on materiality and the productive capacity of stillness.
Urribarri is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Architectural Design from Parsons School of Design. With an extensive background in architecture and interiors, Urribarri has shown works at Laverdin Fine Arts Gallery, Saphira and Ventura Gallery, The Kips Bay Decorators Show, Michael Dawkins Home, and NEST Interiors NYC.
